This body of work is from 2014 and 2015. All the pieces are alla prima—done in a single session—which I think is conducive to the poetics of engagement and jibes with my creative and personal values: being present, paying attention and making do with what you have.
In general, perception and experience drive my work. I think these motivations are distilled when working responsively from a model or the landscape, especially when time is limited due to the constraints of daily life. When there are just a few hours to paint, hesitation yields to action or nothing gets done…and I get cranky. Working this way, to paraphrase Michel de Certeau, is the practice of everyday living, which is at once intuitive and analytical.
Life moves constantly, and I find perfection in visually engaging with it, not preserving an idealized vision of it.
